This breed needs close human companionship, attention and lots of space. This breed is pleasant, gentle, loyal and extremely intelligent. It is a beautiful primarily white dog with a "certain elegance." The Great Pyrenees is very loyal and devoted to its family even if self-sacrifice is required. It is gentle, serious, calm, and well mannered.

The Great Pyrenees is also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog and is used for protecting livestock in pasture. These dogs take their name from the mountain range in southwestern Europe where they long have been used as guardians of the flocks.The normal height runs 27-40 inches, and the weight is 85-100 pounds. The Great Pyrenees will not do well with apartment dwellers.
