Most people think of the Doberman as a guard dog, owners will tell you that they are also a wonderful family pet. This highly intelligent animal learns quickly while becoming your families best friend and your protector.

Doberman Pinschers are among the most common of pet breeds, and the breed is well known as an intelligent, very easy to train, alert, affectionate with the family and loyal companion dog.

Although once commonly used as guard dogs, watch dogs, or police dogs, this is less common today.

Doberman puppies were first bred in Germany around 1890 by Louis Dobermann. He was a tax collector who needed a protection dog to guard him better than anything else alive. The breed is believed to have been created from several different breeds of dogs including the Pinscher, the Rottweiler, the Thuringian Shepherd Dog, the black Greyhound, the Great Dane, the Weimaraner, the German Shorthaired Pointer, and the German Shepherd Dog.

When properly bred, raised, socialized, and trained; Dobermans are loving, loyal, family oriented dogs who will never think of doing such a thing. The only reason a Doberman would turn on anyone is due to abusive treatment. This is not something that is unique to a Doberman. Any animal, humans included, will defend themselves when threatened.

The normal height of a Doberman is somewhere between 24 to 28 inches tall and will weigh between 60 and 90 pounds.
