The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a breed of dog that was developed along the Chesapeake Bay. It hunts under adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break ice during the course of many strenuous multiple retrieves.
The breed is very protective of its people and property. Many owners refer to this breed as the "Chessie".
Equally proficient on land and in the water, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was developed along the Chesapeake Bay to hunt waterfowl under the most adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break ice during the course of many strenuous multiple retrieves. Frequently the Chesapeake must face wind, tide and long cold swims in its work.
These are friendly, intelligent and obedient dogs with a mind of their own. Courageous, willing, loving and trainable although they may be a little slow to learn. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are affectionate and good with children. They love to swim and retrieve.
The normal height is 23-26 inches and weight is 65-80 pounds.
