The Brittany is a great , all-around dog. It is an all-purpose dog, as it can hunt several kinds of animals, yet it is also a great family pet.
Brittanys were first developed in France in the late 19th century. They were called Brittany Spaniels, but in America the spaniel was dropped fairly recently.
They weigh around 35 pounds and are about 19-20 inches tall. Their coat is white with orange, black, or liver markings. Their coat is not too heavy, but it does need occasional grooming. Their fur is straight or slightly wavy.
They have very short or no tails. Their life expectancy is 12 to 13 years. They are in the sporting group of dogs. They are good at pointing and retrieving. They love water and are good swimmers, so they can retrieve water foul. Brittanys are easy to train and eager to please, making them perfect hunting companions.
A house with a fenced yard will provide some exercise, but they still need some structured activity time. A daily walk or ball throw is great for this. If the Brittany does not get enough exercise, the dog will get bored which can then lead to destructive behavior.
Brittanys are also excellent family pets. They are the perfect size, not too big but not too small. They love kids and are very patient. Brittanys love to play and will eagerly play with your kids for hours on end. They are also good watch dogs, always alert and aware of their surroundings. |
